BIOGRAPHY
Amy has been taking dance lessons, ever since she was 12 years old. As a young girl, she started with Classical Indian Dance. Ever ready and keen to learn any genre of dance. As a young adult, she then studied Ballroom Dancing with Shaun & Gladys. (Shaun & Gladys are Ballroom champions). Then in 1997, she was introduced to Lindy Hop (Swing) at Jitterbugs Swingapore, (which is run by the world famous, Lindy Hop champion, Lim Sing Yuen). Being a natural in the art of dance, Jitterbugs invited her, just 4 months later, to join the team to compete at the US Open National in LA, USA. Amy has also studied Hip Hop, Salsa & Flamenco. Upon discovering Line Dance in 2001, she was hooked. She immensely enjoys both competing and performing, she manages to keep up with the international dance standards, while at the same time, improve skills and techniques. Below is a list of her accolades: In April 2002, Amy came in 2nd runner up, with her group “Blue Temptation”, at The American Jamboree which was a competition held at Suntec City, Singapore. In May 2002, she took the Exam by The National Association of Teachers of Dancing Ltd – (UK), by examiner Ms. Peggy Payne and took all 3, Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals with “Highly Commended” results. In May 2002, her group “Country Fusion” came in 1st Place in the group division at the regional Country Line Dance championship held in Singapore. In July 2003, she was invited to be one of the line dancers on a video clip to the then, new, National Day (Independence Day) song, sung by a well known local artiste, Stephanie Sun. It was televised repeatedly, for a couple of months. In August 2003, she competed in the UCWDC Worlds (APD Division) competition in 2 divisions. Her group “Country Fusion” came in 1st in the Group Division. She also came in 2nd Runner up in the Classic Diamond Intermediate (Solo) Division. The move from dance competitions to choreography competitions came swiftly and naturally to the talented Amy. In her very first competition in the choreography category, she came in 1st Runner up in the Choreography Competition organized by Dancefuntasia held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The winning dance ‘Never Gonna Get It!” was jointly choreographed by Amy and two other friends. There were 14 other competitors. The judges at that competition were, Yvonne Anderson, Doug & Jackie Miranda, Mike Sliter, Robbie McGowan Hickie and Julie Molkner. In July 2004, she came in 1st Place with her group “Funky Divas” in the National Line Dance Competition, in Singapore. On 7th November 2004, Amy became a certified “Professional Line Dance Trainer” after successfully completing and passing her Trainer Accreditation Programme by the Professional Association of Line Dancers (PAL). Examiners were Bill Bader & Grant Gadbois. On 7th November 2004, the Country Line Dance Association of Singapore (CLDAS) held their 1st Karaoke Competition for their Line Dance Members and Amy sang, Whitney Houston’s, Saving All My Love For You and walked away with the 1st prize. On 3rd to 5th June 2005, Amy competed in the Choreography Competition at the Dancefuntasia 2005 event, held in Hong Kong and came in 1st for her dance, Feels So Good”, beating 15 other regional competitors. Judges were Barry Amato, Doug & Jackie Miranda, Simon Ward and Chris Watson. On 15th to 20th November 2005, Amy took part in the Choreography Competition at the Vegas Dance Explosion in the US, and came in 2nd runner up for her dance, “Big Time”. She also taught her other winning dance, “Feels So Good” at the event workshop. On 15th January 2006, Amy was invited by the Singapore Professional Ballroom Dancer’s Association, to be a Adjudicator for the Singapore Dance Championships 2006, held at Neptune Theatre, Singapore. On 15th to 18th June, Amy taught at the event Dancefuntasia 2006, held in Taipei, Taiwan, along with Doug & Jackie Miranda, Barry & Dari Anne Amato, Simon Ward, Andrew and Shiela (UK), Vincent and Felicia Chia and Philip Sobreilo. On 1st to 7th January 2007, Amy was invited to teach at the UCWDC Worlds event, at Nashville, Tennessee. On 15th to 17th June, Amy taught at the event Dancefuntasia 2007, held in Penang, Malaysia. In November 2007, Amy was invited to give a workshop in Perth, Australia. On 3rd to 6th January 2008, Amy was again, invited to teach at UCWDC Worlds event, at Nashville, Tennessee. On 4th February 2008, Amy married Ron Sohn and now resides in Michigan, US, where she continues to choreograph dances and teach classes. To be an effective dance instructor, Amy strongly believes in constantly upgrading herself by attending regional dance workshops/training by International leaders in the Dance World. Amy is always keen to research and teach the latest dances to her students. With her flair for music, coupled with her passion for dance, Amy is a successful Line Dance instructor, who enjoys teaching students of all age groups, of various levels (beginner, intermediate & advance).
